In the context of the European Year of Skills and during the Greek celebration of European Skills Week in October 2023, the Greek labour ministry announced the new national skills strategy during the ‘Skills and the connection of workforce to labour market’ event. Eight actions were identified, and the roles of various responsible organisations outlined.

The strategy intervention areas

  • The national skills strategy comprises eight actions/intervention areas focusing on:
  • transformation of the labour market to optimise the workforce skills;
  • strengthening innovation and resilience of companies by upgrading the level of digital skills of the population;
  • cultivating environmental awareness and promoting responsible environmental behaviour;
  • developing the circular economy and promoting energy-saving activities;
  • reducing skill mismatches in the labour market by addressing skill needs at sectoral, professional and regional/local levels;
  • investing in professions and skills for the future;
  • strengthening the capacity of the population (learners/employees) to handle multiple tasks of a similar type or level of difficulty, i.e. by strengthening horizontal skills. This improvement will help to meet diverse and multiple labour market needs;
  • adapting the national skills strategy to individual needs and those of the beneficiaries of training programmes.

The event and the ‘important’ organisations

During the event, the agenda topic ‘Workforce skills required in a digital and green transition of the economy' was discussed with the participation of experts and senior executives, including the Minister for Labour and Social Affairs, the Managing Director of the National Organisation for Certification and Career Guidance (EOPPEP) and social partner representatives. The panel discussion highlighted the important role of EOPPEP and the Public Employment Service (DYPA) in better relating vocational training and certification with the labour market, as well as the importance of the cooperation between the two organisations.
