A new approach to Romanian teacher training in the field of battery and energy storage was facilitated by the European Battery Alliance (EBA) Academy, supported by the European Commission. It aims at creating a positive impact on climate change.

In September and October 2022, the National Centre for TVET Development in collaboration with the EBA Academy offered training to a first group of 28 teachers from IVET schools providing energy-related qualifications. The hybrid training involved self-study sessions, work and access on the EBA Academy platform with learning-by-doing practical activities, interactive exercises and assessment. The training required active participation, high level of self-management and trainee autonomy. Teachers who underwent training are certified by the EBA Academy in applying the latest trends in battery cells and energy storage.

The training programme is designed around the most recent knowledge and expertise technology, leading to specialised competences and updated teaching methods for IVET learners. Certified teachers can also become resource teachers and trainers for their peers.

The EBA Academy provides a landmark programme designed to train the workforce across the entire European battery value chain. It was established in Romania based on the memorandum of understanding concluded between the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Economy and EIT InnoEnergy for the development of the battery sector, including the training and retraining of various target groups, with the aim of achieving European and national objectives regarding climate change and the development of the circular economy.

The objective of the memorandum is to accelerate Romania's involvement in the European battery value chain through more initiatives coordinated by EIT InnoEnergy. To overcome the skills shortage in the field of batteries, the document lays the foundations for the construction of a new education and training network, which, over the next 4 years, will train, improve or retrain around 20 000 people. The memorandum includes provisions on the development of VET programmes relevant to the field of batteries and energy storage through universities and vocational/dual vocational education schools.
