Since the 2016 major update of the initial vocational education and training (IVET) curricula and training standards, assessment of learning outcomes is becoming increasingly important.

Teachers and tutors, including those in work-based learning, are responsible for assessing the learning outcomes in IVET. In September 2021, they received training on how to assess learning outcomes considering updates in the curricula and standards, digitalisation and challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. The training was provided by certified learning outcomes assessors acting as trainers as part of the projectUnitary evaluation of learning outcomes in order to improve the quality of learning in the workplace, EVRICA’, implemented by the National Centre for TVET Development and financed through the EEA Financial Mechanism 2014-21.

Teachers and tutors are also supporting the creation of a public database with more than 2 000 items of various difficulty levels to be used in the assessment of learning outcomes. The added value of the database lies in the new approach in designing assessment items by using statistical analysis instruments to ensure their validity.

The database may help learners identify their level of knowledge/ability throughout the learning process and improve or fill any knowledge gaps with further exercises and/or practice until they fully achieved the learning outcomes required to acquire a qualification.
